News clippings over the years tell the story. “Muni chief claims cuts could improve reliability,” reads a headline from the Examiner in spring 2005. Fast-forward to March 2006, and the headline reads, “Muni's on-time rate plummets further.” Reform is in the air, but history weighs heavily on Muni.

Pedestrians Probe Beneath Driver Hostility

As if being run over weren’t injury enough, pedestrians hit or even killed by motorists then incur the insult of being blamed. The hostility displayed in online comments following a newspaper article on dangerous streets took some pedestrian advocates aback. Others say it’s long been scarier to walk than to bicycle.

Parking Fight Reflects Conflicting Visions

An initiative bankrolled by the owner of a company that builds garages and a clothing chain tycoon looks headed for the November ballot. It calls for massive increases in commercial and residential parking, and housing advocates and transportation activists are up in arms. They say projects crafted through community-based planning would be gutted and pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users endangered.

Better Streets Program Needs Vision to Bring Practical Changes

The very name of the Better Streets program that kicked off in April implies that what we have now are Worser Streets. Transportation advocates would agree, but consensus on what needs to change and how may be elusive.
