Supporting the Immigrant Community
By Tom Ammiano, D9 Supervisor, Jun 11, 2007
I want to let the residents of the Mission know that I am working with the members of the Budget committee to be sure that there is sufficient funding for support and health services to our immigrant communities and to the Immigrants Rights Commission as well, which I would like to see become more pro-active and involved in coming up with constructive solutions to the myriad problems that immigrants face.
The Mission to Get New Park: Potrero del Sol
By Tom Ammiano, D9 Supervisor, May 21, 2007
On May 4th, 2007, at 3:30 PM, a ground-breaking ceremony will take place to celebrate the groundbreaking of La Raza/Potrero del Sol Park, signifying that the community vision for Potrero del Sol Park has become a reality. The community saw the potential for making a space where the extended families of the Mission, gardeners, students and skaters, would all be drawn to the park by the added and improved facilities. Where before, there was mostly unused park land, now families and groups can come together at the 4.5 acre park, a large grassy area to play soccer, skateboard, entertain, picnic, let children play, garden and enjoy each other’s company.
The City is a Sanctuary for Immigrants
By Tom Ammiano, D9 Supervisor, Apr 14, 2007
I want to let my constituents know that there is an opening on the Immigrants Rights Commission and it is my desire to appoint someone from District 9. As everyone in the neighborhood is aware, ICE has begun to conduct raids in the Mission, terrorizing the population at large and violating this City’s long standing Sanctuary City Law. Nowhere more than in the Mission is the effect of the Federal government’s crusade against immigrants and their families felt so strongly, and nowhere else in the city does a community feel so besieged. I encourage all applicants interested in advocating for the human and civil rights of their community to apply, REGARDLESS OF YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS.
Building City-Wide Fiber Network
By Tom Ammiano, D9 Supervisor, Mar 10, 2007
At the end of January I introduced a hearing request to discuss the results of a study which I commissioned three years ago regarding the feasibility of building a citywide fiber/broadband network of the sort being constructed in cities such as Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, and Hong Kong.
DPW Heard Mission Residents
By Tom Ammiano, D9 Supervisor, Feb 15, 2007
As many Mission residents are already aware, the Department of Public Works has proposed to increase mechanical street sweeping up to five times per week on some streets. The overwhelming opinion voiced at the hearing on January 31st was strongly opposed to any increase in street sweeping. Few other issues have galvanized such a wide swath of Mission residents to come out and voice their opinions forcefully. I want to assure everyone that you have indeed been heard.
