Bernal Library Pushes Out Preschool
By Mauricio Vela, Bernal Resident, Jun 19, 2007
After 30 years of being in the Bernal Public Library, the Preschool was pushed out of the Library on June 7, 2008. The Library pushed the Preschool out of the library into Paul Revere even though the temporary site is still not ready. The Paul Revere site has less office and storage space than the space in the library. Our kids are getting short changed again, this is after the City Librarian Luis Herrera stated we would not have to move until the new site was ready. The library does not expect construction to begin until September of 2007. I believe the City Librarian pushed harder after learning on 6/1 that a return to the library is still an option of the Preschool Committee campaign. |

Community Police or Police Suppression?
By Mauricio Vela, Bernal Heights Resident, Feb 15, 2007
At a meeting held on January 17th more than 100 residents and merchants gathered to call for continued foot patrols in the Alemany Public Housing Department and along Cortland Avenue. In addition to Alemany and Cortland Avenue, concerned attendees also wanted problem houses on Andover and Elsie Streets to be dealt with. Alemany has long been known as a place to purchase crack cocaine late at night and has always struggled to address the drug dealing and the crime and violence that comes along with it. |
