CCSF Awarded Federal Stimulus Funds

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on June 30 that City College of San Francisco (CCSF) is among eleven recipients of nearly $10 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act) funds to launch regional California Green Job Corps pilot programs throughout the state. The $931,087 award from the Federal Recovery Act funds will be matched by CCSF. As one of four Bay Area recipients of the California Green Jobs Corps funding, CCSF will provide job training and community service opportunities in California’s emerging green economy. Statewide 1,500 at-risk young adults aged 16–24 will be served, and they in turn will help to create a cleaner environment as well as spur economic growth in California.

San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi says the Mayor’s proposed $1.9 million cut to the Public Defender’s Office will cost the city millions more in the years ahead and take an unnecessary toll on low-income people in the justice system.
Bernal Preschool Suffers $425K Cut

On Feb. 7, after 3-and-half years of fighting the eviction of the Bernal Preschool from the Bernal Library, the Save the Bernal Preschool Committee took a devastating $425,000 blow from the Mayor as part of mid-year budget cuts. The $425,000 was part of the $500,000 raised during last year’s city budget cycle where Supervisor Ammiano successfully convinced fellow board members to support some of the most vulnerable children and families in District 9. The money was budgeted to complete a feasibility study and begin the rebuild of a new Bernal Preschool/Learning Center in the Bernal community hub.
Saving St. Luke’s Hospital

For decades St. Luke’s Hospital has been providing the neighborhood with community based primary and acute health care. Since the take over by Sutter Health/CPMC, services have been reduced or completely discontinued. The Coalition to Save St. Luke’s Hospital is actively meeting to gear up for their continued fight to save essential services at the hospital. The neo-natal center is scheduled to be shut on Feb. 13, and the emergency room will the next major service slated for closure in 2009. Bernal’s Erick Balderas Shooting —On early Sunday morning at 3:20 am, Erick Balderas was dropping off two friends at 23rd and Treat, when a car pulled up and opened fire leaving Erick fatally injured, one of the friends in a coma and the other in critical condition. The shooters are said to be teenagers and no arrest have been made.
