Late-night shift workers and party-goers caught on the wrong side of the Bay after BART has shut down have typically faced limited choices: crash on a sofa belonging to someone they may hardly know, scare up a ride with someone who might be scary indeed, or shell out for a very expensive cab trip home over the Bay Bridge.

Walkability makes every list of reasons for San Francisco’s popularity, but threats to that walkability rarely get discussed. Many intersections force pedestrians to cross three times around freeway ramps to simply proceed on their way. Sidewalks in every neighborhood are obstructed by cars. Wide streets like Alemany or Cesar Chavez make walkers dodge fast-turning cars and red-light runners. And who can even figure out how to get there from here on foot near Lake Merced and the Zoo?

“Chaos.” That’s the word both Ken Rodriguez and Steven Clark used to describe the Muni schedule that went into effect Sept. 24. Rodriguez, president of Transport Workers Union Local 200, and Clark, executive vice president, said the 4 percent service cuts were not fully thought out, and they suspected the new timetables were not even proofread.
